Author Dave Phillips's often hilarious dry wit is well known to his West Point classmates thanks to his decades of service as the Scribe of the Class of 1962. In that capacity he is responsible for periodically creating entertaining accounts of events in the lives of an increasingly smaller cohort of readers. With publication of "Socks, Jocks, and a Light Coat of Oil," he makes it possible for a wider audience to enjoy his extraordinary writing skills and sense of humor.
Originally written as a memoir of his lifelong interest in sports for the rapidly expanding Phillips clan, the book is nonetheless a priceless, entertaining portrait of one aspect of growing up in the 1950s as an Army "brat," attending West Point, ensuing service in the active Army, and a few comments about the perils of subsequent adventures in higher education, as a Professor of Mathematics within the kudzu covered walls of Georgian Academia.
The book is a gem - recounting Phillips lifelong love of sports with a blend of nostalgia and wry humor. It's like something Garrison Keillor would have written if he'd been born at West Point, the middle child of an Army officer and a dance instructor who, by age 48, had spent half his life at the Military Academy.
